[EventCalendar] hiding events from "recent posts"

So far, I love this plug-in but have 1 question.
Is it possible to exclude "events" from "recent posts" in the sidebar?

I understand WHY they are showing up there (they are a post category)  
but I'd like to restrict recent posts to news or editorial content...  
otherwise it seems redundant.

I tried installing "advanced category excluder" but that didn't help.

Any other suggestions?
