[EventCalendar] Filter events in calendar, not posting area

Hi, I have been searching everywhere to find a way to filter which events
are loaded into the sidebar calendar.  I have a main category named
"calendar", with sub categories for individuals.  I would like to have each
individual's page show only their events in the sidebar calendar, but would
like all other pages (which are not individual's pages) show all events.

I would like to have all pages, except artists pages showing all events, but
on each artist page, I would like to only show events that are related to
that artist.  I was assuming I would do that with the ec3_get_calendar()
function, passing a parameter, but I don't see a way to send a parameter to
that function.  I've tried setting the $cat variable right before calling
the function, but it looks like the function is only using the default
category for events.

Is there a way to dynamically change which events are shown?
