OK, I think I figured out what you meant. I snagged the samsarin-php-runner
widget, and put the snippet of php code in there like you suggest. Here’s
the finished product: http://moheg.org

This I think is close enough for now. We have to make an “event post” that
never shows up on the front page, and a “register now” post that isn’t an
"event". This pops up on the front page a few weeks before the event to
remind people. On the other hand, I bet an e-mail is enough and we don't
really need the "reminder post" cluttering the front page. (I bet only about
two members of the group know what RSS is).

I did try to change the SQL Query inside EventCalendar to not filter on the
post's status, but I'm missing something. I took a very simple-minded
approach and didn't pursue it very far. As I say, this is good enough for
now. I am just barely beginning to understand WordPress and this calendar
example is enlightening.
