Thank you for your reply, A;

I didn't really expect that this would fix it but I am getting to my
wits' end and am pretty much willing to try anything at this point.
(Also, I have to say that I find the mix of double and single quotes
to be aesthetically displeasing and had really hoped that was the
answer.... ;-))

Drat!! So sorry for all this. (See? It's true: a little knowledge IS a
dangerous thing ;-)) I have just re-downloaded and uploaded the
original 3.1.0 eventcalendar3.php from http://wpcal.firetree.net.
Sadly, the problem of the previous or next month's calendar failing to
display any events or posts at all still persists.

I cannot find this URL in the source code so I am assuming I have
undone any bad things I did to cause that error.

I run another wordpress and have removed all of the attempts in
template-functions.php to fix the validation errors (appending
wp-specialcharacters in various places as per fixes noted in thread
entitled "ec3_get_events() not
translating ampersands into character entities" ) and also uploaded
the original 3.1.0 eventcalendar3.php

This has half happy results: all months EXCEPT load correctly now;
May, July, September still fail to load any events or posts at all.

VERY confusing!

P.S. other wordpress is located at etherwork.net/blog (same thing goes
for making the address a live link - I'm really getting tired of
spammers...)
