[EventCalendar] ec3_before syntax question

Hello EC list-

quick question.. I want to have a listing of all events future and  
past in a specific sub-category listed chronologically could I just  
edit the line:

http://lmysite/news/?ec3_before=today&cat=2

_changing today to some way off future date? 01/01/3001

http://lmysite/news/?ec3_before=01013001&cat=2

But what is the syntax for the ec3_before statement? can it even  
accept actual dates or is it limited to today?
