[EventCalendar] using event date rather than post date

Hello,
  I've just installed EC3.1, as per instructions, but the sidebar 
calendar uses the post dates for events, rather than the event dates.  
How do I get it to work like it works on the EC web page? I see there 
that the post dates are different from the dates hilighted on the 
sidebar calendar.
