i solved the PHP 4 problem by forcing PHP 5 in the .htaccess file as 
per the instructions from my hosting provider. this allows the 
calendar to run without error. PHP 5 will be the default at site5 in 
the new year.

however, 2 other problems arise: my event posts now appear on my blog 
page, even though i have selected 'keep separate.

the other thing is the pop-ups used to show multiple events on 
separate lines within a constant width window. now they show on one 
long line ending in ... when the line is too long.
so i'm back to my stock rc3 for the moment.

one other question: when these minor issues get resolved, i'm not 
clear exactly how to invoke the full-page calendar. do i create a new 
page with the style tags you've mentioned? i see nothing on the 
plugin page or the wordpress options that reference the big calendar.
