Ha. Well my code doesn't comply to the WP standards at all.
I think the main thing is to keep each file consistent. If someone were to produce a patch which changed the WHOLE of EventCalendar to the 'standard' WP format I would accept it.
Until then, we'll keep everything internally consistent at least.

O'Reilly's "Dynamic HTML" is my bible. I highly recommend that book.
