Jim, thanks for giving me a copy of your site. It did enable me to see
some of the problems you've been having. I have solved at least a couple
of your problems, so read on...

Sidebar Widgets 1.0 seems to be broken. This is certainly responsible
for some of the strangeness you are seeing. I upgraded to the latest
version, and suddenly the EC widgets started working.

FrontPageFilter .9 is not written to play nicely with other plugins.
Don't use it. If you want it fixed, I suggest you contact its author...
Briefly when it JOINs wp_post2cat table it needs to rename it into its
own namespace, otherwise conflicts occur.

I'm not saying that there are not other problems to be found. But, why
don't you tackle these ones and then see where that gets us?
